After negotiating countless road works through Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire, then slow moving tractors and hitting rush hour traffic in Crewe, I finally arrived at Sparrow Grove yesterday, eventually.
Knowing I was up against it with a relatively strong, biting easterly wind, I was still confident of catching.
While setting up I saw a lovely looking carp, probably around 10lb common, showing itself.
A few balls of groundbait, a couple of pouches of maggots, hemp and 3mm pellets to prime the swim. I took the 'feed to bites approach'. After about 2 hours I managed a roach just under 1lb. However, that was it until 6ish when I landed a blade roach. Finally the float gently bobbed and slid away. This was no roach, most definitely my target Tench. After a spirited scrap on light float gear I landed this 5lb+ tench.
Oh and as I was leaving I had to deter someone from fishing off the carpark who wasn't a member.

Try bigger baits for the tench they feed freely on 14mm pellets hair rigged I have had several but noticed they tend to come on in the afternoon. Also method feeder with corn works but not as well. the bites are like barbel . The pellet can also catch the carp.but the carp will only come close in before spawning then they tend to sit over against the far bank in summer near the big willow.
Yes stephen! That wind was bitter so a great result. 👍
