About Lymm Angling Club

Founded in 1948, Lymm Angling Club has grown into one of the largest and most respected clubs in the North West. From quiet canals and picturesque pools to legendary specimen waters like Lymm Vale, our portfolio spans Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales.

We’re proud to offer something for every angler – whether you’re after tench and carp, chasing barbel on the Severn, or enjoying a day’s pleasure fishing on our stillwaters.

Run by anglers, for anglers, the club is built on a strong volunteer spirit. Our water keepers and work parties not only keep the fisheries in top condition but also carry out important conservation work to protect them for the future.

After more than 75 years, our ethos remains the same: great fishing, well-managed waters, and a friendly community of like-minded anglers.

Club history

Where it all began

Lymm Angling Club was founded back in 1948, during the post-war boom in angling clubs. Right from the start, the aim was simple – to bring anglers together and provide access to a wide variety of quality waters across the North West.

Building the portfolio

Through the 1950s and 60s the club steadily grew, taking on rivers, canals and stillwaters. A landmark moment came in the early 1970s when the club purchased an old sand quarry at Whitegate, Cheshire. At the time, the water was highly acidic and considered a gamble, but with support from the Sports Council it became one of our crown jewels – Lymm Vale.

The Lymm Vale years

Careful stocking and management transformed Lymm Vale into a true specimen water. Tench from the famous Woburn Abbey estate were introduced in the late 70s, followed by limited stockings of barbel, chub and eels. Over time, carp and catfish also became established.

The lake gained national fame in April 2000 when member Michael Wilkinson caught a golden orfe of 8lb 5oz, setting a new British record. Although the orfe have since disappeared, Lymm Vale continues to be known for its superb tench fishing, big carp and powerful catfish.

Expanding onto the rivers

Alongside stillwaters, the club grew its river portfolio. From the 1990s onwards we secured some excellent stretches of the Severn and Vyrnwy, offering barbel, chub and grayling fishing in stunning countryside. In 2015 further waters were added around Llandrinio and Melynoig Fawr, strengthening our river card and making access even easier for members.

Today

Fast forward to the present day and Lymm Angling Club offers members dozens of waters across Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales. From specimen lakes and canals to classic river beats, there’s something for everyone.

None of this would be possible without the tireless work of our volunteers, water keepers and work parties, who not only keep our waters safe and well maintained but also carry out vital conservation work – from habitat improvements to tree planting and bird box schemes.

Over 75 years on, Lymm AC continues to grow, providing fantastic fishing opportunities for all while staying true to the founding principle: a club run by anglers, for anglers.
